March is colon cancer awareness month. Cancer of the colon or rectum is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancers that affect both men and women. Screening has been shown to catch cancers early and prevent death. Screening can be done with a scope of the colon or stool testing. Recently the recommended age to start screening has changed from 50 years old to 45 years old, for people without a family history of cancers. For people with a history of cancers in their family or with Lynch syndrome the age to start screening may be in the 20s. If this applies to you, schedule an appointment with your physician as soon as possible.
